In this blog we want to dive deeper into a common JNIT use case; On premises to Cloud Migration. We receive many requests to execute migrations and manage post migration steps. A typical Cloud Migration assignment is split in goals and mile stones.

Here is a classical requirements list we see often:

Assist in implementing Office 365 to:

  • replace on-premise Exchange Server to Exchange Online
  • provide mailboxes with 50GB each to all staffs
  • provide Calendar sharing
  • allow Resources booking
  • have an Address book and grouping
  • move SharePoint to SharePoint Online

We basically need to do a functional Email Platform Migration. First we provide a process of provisioning. We prepare the initial configuration of the email environment (Office 365) and knowledge transfer to the Customer IT staff on the new usage of the email management portal.

In some cases the email format changes. This could be:

Existing Format

Fullname.location@domain-name

New Format

Firstname.lastname@domain-name

An important part of the migration is good housekeeping. For this we make a plan covering Office 365 Readiness Assessment, Onsite Discovery, and Project Planning. This part of the process covers a long checklist, excluding problems later during cutover. Some of the point we run through is, Networking and Naming Services Planning and determining required tasks for configuring network and DNS. Other check list items are User Identity and Account Provisioning Planning and SSO planning.

Preparing the environment for an Office 365 Deployment. The preparation now also involves more then IT. The Business needs to be informed and educated on the changes. But also commodity tasks are covered here such as anti-spam and malware protection. Configuring the end user stations as well as assuring a good experience is key.

With the Migration and Cutover phase we start to assign licenses to users. We also run a heavy test list.

Finally, we provide Post Deployment Support and Office 365 Administration Training. This includes onsite training, and Admin O365 services. Contact JNIT or visit our page on Devops here
